Human Rights Protection Program

The goal of the Human Rights Protection block grant is to create effective tools to eliminate social stereotypes, prejudice and to strengthen the judiciary and human rights advocacy, multiculturalism, non-discrimination, principles of legal state, democracy, human rights and freedom by supporting innovative and pilot projects.

Projects supported within this priority aim to improve the quality of relationships in multicultural society with special attention to interests of disadvantaged groups.
Projects include the following areas of support: rapprochement and coexistence of different cultures, elimination of stereotypes and social prejudices, legislative and institutional framework concerning multicultural relations, social and professional discussion, institutional and professional capacities of NGO-s operating in the field.

WE LIVE IN ONE CITY

Centrum of Community Development
Brief Description:
This project aims at gradual improvement of the relationship between the Roma and non-Roma populations of the city of Nitra. The project aims to encourage social integration and mutual cooperation between the two cultures.
Aims:

  • To help Roma mothers overcome their social marginalisation, and create the room for their social integration 
  • To make their social inclusion safe and sustainable  
  • To encourage mutual tolerance between Roma and non-Roma social groups
  • To establish a “Mother Centre” for Roma mothers and create links with the non-Roma Mother Centre in Nitra
  • To prepare common activities and encourage active participation of both – Roma and non-Roma mothers
  • To battle prejudices, social stereotypes, and social barriers

MultikulturART – GET TO KNOW THE CULTURE OF MINORITIES

People in Peril
Brief Description:
The primary aim of the project is to encourage multicultural understanding in different regions of Slovakia and contribute toward better tolerance for minorities (Roma people, the Hungarians, legal aliens, economic migrants).
Aims:

  • To organise workshops for teachers  
  • To prepare a practical multimedia project and introduce it at 9 pilot high schools  
  • To distribute the methodology of the project to 200 other high schools
  • To improve multicultural relations in local communities of all pilot high schools
  • To battle prejudices, social stereotypes, and social barriers

Brief Description:
The project aims to improve relationships in multicultural society in the East of Slovakia with an emphasis on protecting and advocating the interests of the socially disadvantaged and contribute to a gradual improvement in their living conditions.
Aims:

  • To prepare 3 high profile competing projects
  • To involve 340-610 participants
  • To organise 4 workshops for representatives of socially disadvantaged groups
  • To organise three cross-sectoral round tables in chosen multicultural communities
  • To organise a presentation-networking event for the public

The project addresses the most important innovation in the educational system. The project aims to encourage systematic transformation of the traditional model of education into a multicultural one.

  • To analyse the impact of the Curriculum reform after its implementation
  • To define key areas of transformation  
  • To prepare an online-course“Multicultural Education”
  • To test the course with 16 selected teachers and schools from all regions of Slovakia
  • To introduce innovative elements of informal learning

  • To develop a new model of integration-related research
  • To influence the public opinion on the issues of social integration
  • To broaden existing data on new minorities in the Slovak Republic

The project would like to draw public attention to the state of multiculturalism in the Slovak Republic. It monitors old and new minorities – but primarily those that emerged as a result of labour migration.
Aims:

  • To conduct several quantitative and qualitative researches concerning labour migration  
  • To map the patterns of labour migration in the Slovak Republic  
  • To prepare a book based on the results of the research and publish academic articles
  • To contribute toward wide dissemination of the results of the research

MULTICULTURALITY IN ZEMPLIN

The aim of the project is to encourage a more peaceful coexistence between different communities of the Zemplin region and create the room for public discussion on the issue of multiculturalism in the region. 
Aims:

  • To organise workshops, campaigns, and a photography exhibition
  • To make a video and involve the media
  • To organise a Conference for the representatives of all communities of the region    
  • To involve schools and other institutions in the project and invite them to a seminar on multiculturalism

The aim of the project is to educate young high school students and non-governmental organisations representatives in an informal way.
Aims:

  • To organise intensive weekend-long workshops, fieldtrips, high school classes
  • To take part in the organisation of an international festival
  • To prepare a documentary, coursebooks for schools, and organise a press conference  
  • To organise a final meeting of all project participants
  • To create a network of young civil society leaders with a profound respect for ethnic minorities

TIMES OF NEW MINORITIES

The project aims to raise the awareness of the rich culture and traditions of new minorities living in the Slovak Republic. The emphasis is placed on improved cooperation between new minority groups.

  • To organise a 4th and 5th festival titled “A Week of New Minorities” which takes place in Bratislava on an annual basis
  • To cooperate with representatives of new minorities
  • To encourage new networking links between minority-groups
  • To promote new minorities culture, ways of life, and traditions  
  • To battle prejudices, social stereotypes, and social barriers

The aim of the project is to stir changes in the educational system with an emphasis on better understanding of different cultures, ethnicities and religions. The project aims to help the public to overcome cultural prejudices and stereotypes.
Aims:

  • To analyse the ways foreign politics issues  (such as migration or terrorism) influence existing cultural prejudices
  • To identify the needs and expectations of teachers
  • To create a report on possible reforms of the educational system  
  • To create a platform helping teachers to exchange their views and experience
  • To create relevant teaching aids for primary and high school curriculum
  • To organise workshops for teachers
